Cooler air and the crispness of Fall brings out the best in Trout fishing. Both sections both around Cotter to Bull Shoals have been fishing well for both Rainbow Trout and resident Brown Trout. Browns certainly become more hungry as the weather changes and becomes cooler. As the weather changes, Brown Trout become more aggressive and focus on the winter spawning cycle.

Fly Fishing: Best Fly Fishing Techniques for the White River Trout have been free style nymphing along the bottom. Ticking near the bottom has been key for the larger Trout on the White River. Scud patterns in smaller sizes, (#16 & #18) have been producing fish. Micro egg patterns and small beads have been working well. Trout spawn all throughout the winter months on this tail water fishery so egg flies are a must! Natural colors have been producing the best right now. During power generation, a little brighter colored egg flies are working well. Small nymphs like Pheasant tails, Wooley Buggers, Hare’s Ears and Scuds all work well during the Winter months. When the water levels are up, the streamer game here is strong! Big streamers stripped along the banks really produce some quality fish including a few trophies.

Spinning Gear: Crank baits and shrimp have been our “Go to” baits of choice. Power Bait has been working well for Rainbow Trout. White jigs fished near the bottom also fish well. Live Shiner minnows usually work well all winter long and draw some larger trout. Casting crank baits also produces many nice fish. Weather has been a bit warm for the Shad kills. Shad kills occur most often in later January and February when water temperatures are the coldest. Shad Kills or crank bait fishing calls in the big boys! Right after the spawn in December, these brown trout are hungry and ready to feed again.

Here’s today’s The Best River Fishing Report:

It sure felt great today to get on the water. Fly Fishing was our name, nymphing was our game! We put in at the Woods launch below Bull Shoals Dam on the White River this morning. Fly rods in hand, we were excited to fish for Rainbow trout today.

Jim wanted to keep a few for dinner so we spent a few hours boon doggling indicators for a bit. immediately we hooked several nice rainbows on scud patterns. Scud patterns and small size 18 Frenchie nymphs worked well this morning. (Frenchie is basically a pheasant tail nymph with a florescent thorax, shell pink, orange, etc.) It’s a great fly when the water is a bit off color. We also hit a few nice brown trout on eggs patterns. Brown Trout usually spawn on the Norfork, and the White during the winter months. apparently there’s still a handful spawning on the shoals. Peach egg patterns took a couple nice fish.

The Best River FishingReport laterr in the day. They started to generate later in the day. We threw streamer for awhile. Bob landed a nice brown trout on a shad streamer. (Ice Man Minnow) There was a decent shad kill over the past few days. I think the big fish are keyed up on shad patterns . I think the streamer fly fishing should remain excellent over the next few days for sure. Heavier sink tip lines help big flies get down to the fish.

Jim and Bob ended our afternoon with several nice fish to the net and a limit of quality Rainbow Trout.

I think fishing will remain good, especially with the Shad die off on the White River.

World Class Brown Trout Fishing – White River.

We spent the last couple of days fishing below the Bull Shoals Dam catch and release area. This section opens on February 1st each year, right after the brown trout spawn. Good numbers of the browns in that section. They were quite thin, skinny trout but there was lots of fish, both brown trout, and rainbows. We landed many fish on smaller, white streamers, and nymphing small glo bugs (Natural egg patterns)

Another, do not miss for this time of year, (Winter) is the shad kills that frequently happen this time of the year. Shad die offs occur when we have a severe cold snap, shad become lethargic and get sucked through the turbines at the dam. Injured shad offer a smorgasbord for big trout. Crippled prey offer a feast for these fish, and often times, is the key to unlocking a trophy!!

Big streamers tied in white, pearl, yellow, and brown offer good shad variations, don’t ask me why but, big trout just pound yellow / brown streamers for some reason. Small shad patterns like the Ice Man Minnow, or smaller white woolly buggers, or buck tail flies also work great. White River Trout Streamers

If you’re a bait spin fishing guy, this is an awesome time to be on the water! Casting jerk baits (Rapala, Husky Jerk, Berkley Frenzy) along the shore line can produce some bigger trout. I prefer a very strong, snap, snap, pause, seems to work best. Remember to pause your jerk bait for a little bit. Remember, it’s winter and the water temperatures is cold! These fish can be slow and sluggish with the colder water temperatures. You can’t believe how many times we big fish on the pause, it’s a major deal with jerk baits. White River Fishing Report for the past few days. The weather has been mild so far this winter. We fished the White River for the past three days and found trout fishing to be excellent! Chad landed this huge brown trout (Pictured left) on a tiny micro egg. Trout fishing has been excellent even though the generation has been low. One to two generators were running on most days. It’s down to minimum flows for the winter months. White River levels were low and clear below Bull Shoals Dam.

Fishing the lower end of the riffles seemed to be the most productive for us. Water temperatures are still relatively warm, mid 40’s so trout have been very active. Late December, January and February are primary spawning times for these fish, and have been actively spawning the past few days. These trout usually continue to spawn throughout the winter months, through February.

Our best baits lately have been Power Bait eggs hooked onto a single hook and drifted along the bottom. Eggs flies have also been working well. Smaller eggs flies have been the best although it’s hard to beat the scent from Power Bait.

Both Brown Trout and Rainbows have been hot on the spawn. During certain times of the day, we could see fish actively spawning on the gravel shoals. I personally don’t fish to trout on spawning gravel but fishing behind them has been outstanding! Tons of Rainbows behind the spawning Brown trout. Limits of nice Rainbows.

During the past several weeks, water temperatures have been perfect and trout have been focused on spawning. It’s been a little bit early for winter shad kills so we’ve been spending time fishing above and below the riffles. Spawning fish generally spawn on the lower end of the riffles. 4) Time of day – Time of the day makes a big difference for Trout and Steelhead fishing. Both Brown Trout and Rainbow are a very skittish, spooky fish. First light in the morning, last light in the evening, and night time offer the best times of the day to fish for these. These fish feel secure during low light periods and that is the best time to catch them. Middle of the day, in the sunshine is comfortable to anglers but not a good time to catch trout.
